Rampant MSN messages

Is it just me, or have you all gotten messages on MSN from strangers asking you to view their webcams? Recently I seem to be getting a few messages a day from weirdos giving me a brief description of how young and hot they are, and that they are lonely and horny.

They've been quite annoying. Today, however, I got 4 messages that have a different message that has a new spin to try to get my attention:

(Note: I accidently closed one before getting a screenshot, so there are only 3 messages shown here.)

The messages all say, "Nina Hey.....I cant upload my pics to msn for some reason! Hit me back up on YAHOO messenger if you can, my username on there is _______"

So, with these messages they've accomplished 4 things.
1. They've managed to figure out what my first name is based on my ID. Not such an easy task, if you think about how stupid the general population is.
2. They've came up with a way to make themselves sound like my personal friends.
3. They've decided to pass on these skills to other spammers, or it might have been one person with multiple names copying and pasting the same line at random times of the day. Either way, it's pretty impressive to see this type of determination.
4. They've gone cross platform between MSN and YAHOO messengers. This might be the most useless and bizarre preliminary attempt the Yahoo acquisition by Microsoft.

Oooohhhh.... Ding ding ding! While I was typing up this entry I received yet another message:

Wow, just wow! I applaud you, hard working spammers! I'm certainly glad you are not focusing your energy on coming up with any new WMDs. If you did, the earth will not be here long.

your blog is the only one that showed up when I searched for "Hit me back up on YAHOO messenger if you can"

Perhaps one of our contacts has been infected (etc.). I have a contact that once in a while sends me a random link. If they've changed our name in their contact list (my friend may have called me Scott instead of misterma...@), then said malware could be using that.

I'm getting to the point where I may just cancel that messenger account for this reason. We've got spam filters for email--I'm hoping Meebo (or other sites) can start filtering our IMs.

eHi!
This happened to me too.
But in my case it's something like this

"Hey Alex%20Voda .....I cant upload my pics to msn for some reason!
Hit me back up on http://ginatygit.blogspot.com"

It is getting really annoying!

I am getting these daily now, all MSN though and all pointing to Blogspots that re-direct to porn sites.

I'm getting the same damn thing, it's easily fixed by blocking messages from people not on your allow list:

It has instructions for Trillian as well as the official client, but I'm hoping there's a better solution because I like being able to get messages from people I've not got on my contact list.

I think there's a Trillian plugin that implements challenge-response based filtering, or maybe we could use pattern matching and the "Trigger" plugin, I've not got around to playing with them yet though. Also, that's only helpful if you're running Trillian Pro and can use plugins.

I highly doubt it has something to do with any of your contacts as their email addresses/ids change all the time. Also, I use Miranda IM, not Live Messenger. I get about 20 a day and I have now set up my client so that no one except my friends can contact me.
I suspect this is a MSN protocol exploit.

I've even set up MSN to block messages from people not on my Allow list, and I still get the messages. Very annoying for sure, and not easily fixed for some reason in my case.
